Active Transportation Committee names funding and programming its top 2026 priority

WFRC’s Active Transportation Committee ranked funding and programming highest among its 2026 priorities and approved a work approach favoring mini-workshops and extended workshops to tackle design, policy and maintenance issues over three remaining meetings.
At its hybrid meeting, the Active Transportation Committee (ATC) prioritized funding and programming as the committee’s leading focus for 2026 and agreed to use mini-workshops and occasional extended workshops at upcoming meetings to advance priority topics.
The committee’s decision follows a facilitated discussion led by Hugh Van Wagon (WFRC staff lead) in which members reviewed a compilation of stakeholder responses and voted in a live poll. Other top priorities that emerged were planning and policy, design and safety, and maintenance. Mayor Walker said the committee will harness the remaining three meetings this year to pursue targeted work products.
Members emphasized tangible near-term needs: seed funding for bridge and corridor projects, technical assistance for trail design, better coordination with UDOT and UTA, and local strategies such as neighborhood byways to deliver immediate safety and connectivity improvements. Several speakers urged the committee to support smaller cities that lack in-house design or grant-writing capacity.
“Assistance with UDOT” and making implementation easier for cities on tight budgets were repeatedly raised during the discussion, and members suggested inviting Utah Trail Network representatives and other funding partners to improve coordination. WFRC staff will follow up by organizing topic-specific workshops and a poll-based workplan for the rest of the year.
The committee’s prioritization sets the agenda for staff follow-up and informs which technical and funding topics will receive deeper attention in upcoming meetings. No binding policy was adopted at this meeting; the committee’s decisions define its work focus and inform staff outreach and the design of future sessions.
