Director Kate Grandoski told the Forest Grove School District Board of Directors on May 26 that she will resign from the board effective June 10, 2026, saying family circumstances and plans to spend time in New Zealand prompted the decision. "I am going to resign from the school board beginning June 10th," she said, adding she plans to leave later in the year to be with family.
The board amended the meeting agenda to add an action item to declare the vacancy and to start a discussion on the application and appointment process. Board members debated whether to approve a full timeline and application language immediately. "I'm not personally comfortable yet having [a vote] on the process and timeline," one director said during discussion, urging more board conversation before posting an application.
After further discussion and an attempted amendment, the board voted to declare the vacancy effective June 10, 2026 and to continue work on the application process. The narrower motion to declare the vacancy carried; during the recorded voice vote one board member said, "I opposed." The board directed leadership and staff to revise the draft application based on the meeting discussion and circulate it to directors before posting. Staff said they aim to post the application once the board finalizes question wording and logistics.
Board members emphasized the district’s need for a candidate who can collaborate with the existing board and support the district’s strategic priorities during the remainder of the term. The board also discussed practical expectations for applicants — meeting cadence, potential executive session attendance and community advocacy — and asked staff to include the district’s goals and a plain‑language description of board duties with the application.
Next steps: leadership will revise the draft application to reflect the board’s input and share it with directors for review; staff and leadership agreed to internal deadlines for edits and a target posting window to solicit applicants for the seat through the end of June.
