Board honors robotics team and Poetry Out Loud national representative
Summary
Bethany Public Schools recognized its robotics team for competing at Worlds and a student who advanced to the Poetry Out Loud national stage; students described their build, travel and competition experiences.
The board recognized student achievements in STEM and the arts.
Members of the high school robotics team described their build-test cycle, material choices (polycarbonate panels, 3D-printed treads), and the competition format that includes an autonomous period and alliance play. The team said they used iterative prototyping — MDF mockups followed by polycarb parts — and described travel to the World competition where thousands of participants and dozens of countries were present. One student, Nicholas, said he is a junior among seniors and that the team rebounded from an early finish to place third at their second event.
High school student Sarah Wheatley read a poem and recounted qualifying for Poetry Out Loud through state competition; she said she placed first at state and attended Nationals in Washington, D.C., where 54 students representing states and territories competed. Administrators congratulated both groups and highlighted the educational value of competition and performance opportunities.
The board thanked the students and invited them to a post-meeting celebration.
