Valley Central honors top 10 students and spotlights Alternative Learning Center Women’s History project

The Valley Central School District Board of Education recognized the high school’s top 10 academic students for the class of 2026 and heard a student presentation from the Alternative Learning Center (ALC) at its May 11 meeting.
Valedictorian Michael Catania Jr. introduced himself and thanked teachers, coaches and family; other top‑10 students briefly described academic and extracurricular highlights and their college plans. The board and audience applauded each student as names and post‑high‑school plans were announced.
ALC Social Studies teacher Hannah Fenn and her students presented a cross‑curricular Women’s History Month project that combined research, art and social‑emotional learning. Students researched lesser‑known women, created informational posters and stamps, held a month‑long trivia contest with 3D‑printed prizes, and wrote letters to women who had influenced them. Several students described who they wrote to and why; the district reported the letters generated positive response in the community when mailed.
Fenn and ALC students said the project emphasized research skills, source evaluation, creative expression and reflection. The board thanked students and staff for the presentation and noted the work had drawn attention online during March.
The recognition and presentation were ceremonial and informational; no board action was required.
