Board discusses career-technical access as CVTech prioritizes in-district students

Bethany Public Schools administrators reported that 41 students have been accepted to Canadian Valley Technology Center (CVTech) for the coming year and discussed changes in how career-technical centers prioritize applicants.

Administrators said CVTech is prioritizing students who live in its taxing district, which may affect some Bethany students who live outside CVTech boundaries. The district advised students to apply to the career-tech center tied to their home address (for example, Francis Tuttle or Metro Tech) as well as CVTech when appropriate, to protect access to scholarships and transportation options.

District leaders explained the career-technical ‘‘Next Step’’ scholarship remains tied to a student’s home district; students living in another center’s district should still qualify for that district’s scholarship. The board heard that transportation arrangements (such as a CVTech bus) are an important benefit for in-district students, and that changing a partnership or annexing to a different career-tech district would require a public vote and a formal annexation process.

Administrators said their review shows Bethany students’ acceptance rates to CVTech are comparable to peer districts (roughly in the 50% range), but the district will change advising practices to ensure students apply where they live to preserve scholarship eligibility and transportation options. The board did not take further action beyond directing staff to inform students and families of the updated guidance.

Next steps: counseling and enrollment staff will brief students on application strategy based on home address and coordinate with career-tech centers on transportation and scholarship guidance.
