Students show Carey guidance‑suite redesign as board recognizes awards and student achievement

Students in the Sewanhaka Central High School District’s career technical education architecture program presented two design proposals for a redesigned guidance suite at H. Frank Carey High School, explaining goals, floor plans and aesthetic choices to the board on March 24.
Franco Vanezza described the existing guidance area as "tight, unwelcoming" and urged a renovation that would expand the lobby, create a student lounge and add private counselor offices. Student teams presented floor plans that included separated kitchenettes, glass block windows outside offices for light and three office typologies (registrar, counselor, social worker). One student presenter stated, "We calculated a 43% width increase" to improve circulation and added that one design expanded the suite by nearly 3,000 square feet.
Alyssa Fagan and other students walked trustees through mood boards, glass partitions, furniture decisions and a larger conference room designed to allow staff meetings without interruptions from food service activities. Teacher and CTE program staff framed the project as industry‑mentored work and said students had presented the designs to industry professionals for feedback.
Earlier in the meeting the board acknowledged district achievements: Kyra Ozil, the ex‑officio student board member, recapped Black History Month and Women's History Month programming, CTE and SkillsUSA competition results (about 60 participating students with 25 first‑place finishes cited), and district musicals and art shows. The board also recognized awardees including Anthony Broncado (Section 8 Athletic Administrator of the Year) and coach Akil Rodney (2025 National High School Coach of the Year), and multiple National Merit finalists and student art scholarship recipients.
Board members praised the students’ work and staff for supporting CTE programming; the district indicated the Carey guidance redesign will move forward in planning.
