The Federal Election Commission on July 25 approved a draft notice of proposed rulemaking to remove the requirement that a candidate’s principal campaign committee report information on FEC Form 3Z when the candidate has multiple authorized committees.
Ms. Waldman, presenting the item (agenda document 24‑23A), said the notice seeks comment on whether eliminating Form 3Z would negatively affect public disclosure of principal committee and authorized committee financial activities, and on how and why the public currently uses Form 3Z.
Commissioners expressed support for potentially removing duplicative reporting that may be obsolete in an era of searchable, sortable disclosure data. The motion to approve the draft notice carried unanimously.
If published in the Federal Register, the NPRM will open a comment period for stakeholders to explain whether removal of the form would harm transparency and, if so, what alternatives should be considered.
