Sand Creek principal seeks approval for new English curriculum and an updated sociology text

Sanchez Martinez said teachers evaluated three English products and selected Into Literature because it met criteria for grade‑level text complexity, diverse literary and nonfiction selections, embedded assessment and support for data‑driven instruction and test preparation. She emphasized implementation support and fidelity as key to success.
On the sociology text, she said the school’s current materials had not been updated since the early 2000s. The proposed Pearson text includes discussion prompts, research connections and a global perspective; the team preferred a hard‑copy edition to avoid recurring subscription costs. Sanchez Martinez said available COP curriculum and technology funds would cover the purchase.
Board members praised the review process and asked to be able to check materials outside of school hours; the president and members agreed by consensus to move both adoption items to the upcoming meeting agenda for formal action.
"They deserve to have the best curriculum in front of them," Sanchez Martinez said, describing teachers’ desire for scaffolds, extensions and real‑time data to guide instruction.
The board will consider formal adoption at its next regular meeting.
