At the March meeting, Mandy of the Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy reported the conservancy purchased an 18.8‑acre ecologically significant property on Meridian Road — the largest acquisition in the conservancy’s 33‑year history — and that the purchase was fully funded by a private donation from resident Leo Stevenson. The site will be named the Leo G. Stevenson Family Preserve and includes upland forest, wetlands, marsh and shoreline that support local marsh habitat.
Mandy also reported trail upgrades at the Bruce Jones Preserve, including a new gravel layer to improve footing and access from the bike path, and announced a $1,000 scholarship opportunity for high‑school seniors who demonstrate commitment to protecting the natural environment. The conservancy invited committee members and residents to volunteer for Earth Day planning and conservation activities.
