Shepherdsville parks department seeks two new positions as events and amenities expand

Parks & Recreation staff asked the Shepherdsville City Council to approve an amendment to ordinance 025-038 that would authorize two additional positions — an operations/administrative assistant and a seasonal parks maintenance worker — to support a rapidly expanding slate of events and new park facilities.
Sam Satterly, who presented the update, told the council the department is preparing for baseball and tee-ball seasons, completing the disc-golf back nine within the next two months, installing shade at the skate park, adding grills and hot-coal disposal bins, and assuming responsibility for the community center (capacity 200). She also said the city is working on brownfield remediation and redevelopment for properties it owns along North Buckman/Preston Highway and is awaiting additional soil and groundwater test results.
Satterly said finance has confirmed available funds and that she will send the council a formal email in the morning with a request packet and job descriptions. She described the operations assistant as administrative support to free Parks & Rec managers for field work and the seasonal parks worker as short-term maintenance help that could become full-time if someone is retained after the season.
Council Member Rob moved to add the two positions and agreed to sponsor the ordinance amendment; members discussed making the positions effective July 1 when the new fiscal year starts or providing some interim support through public works funds. Staff emphasized the need to develop formal job descriptions and to set authorized staffing levels in the ordinance before hiring.
Satterly also requested council support for future hiring as park activity grows: she said seasonal hires frequently transition to full-time roles, and the department plans to present formal budget language for the next fiscal cycle. The council did not record a final vote on the ordinance amendment during the meeting; staff will return with the formal amendment and supporting documents.
