Resident recounts home fire, urges support for local fire department

Shelley Freeze told the city commission that on Feb. 27 a fast‑moving fire threatened her property and nearby structures and that neighbors, family and multiple fire departments responded to protect homes. "For a second, your mind feels frozen," Freeze said, describing frantic efforts by neighbors to move belongings, deploy hoses and create fire breaks.
Freeze credited Huron’s fire department and mutual‑aid crews from neighboring districts for their response and urged the commission to support the department’s equipment and training needs. "Whether it's new fire equipment, brush trucks, UTVs, or additional training, these resources are essential for the safety of our entire community," she said, and she urged the city to address known operational shortfalls that limit use of certain apparatus.
Commissioners thanked Freeze and her neighbors for their efforts and acknowledged the risks first responders face. The commission did not take immediate formal action at the meeting; Freeze offered to provide photos and documentation to aid grant applications.
The presentation served as a public‑forum request for support rather than a formal funding proposal; follow‑up items would be handled through department budgeting or a future agenda item if the department submits a funding request.
