Council approves $275,000 to cover police station renovation overruns

The East Providence City Council voted Aug. 19 to appropriate $275,000 to cover unanticipated costs associated with renovations at the city's police station.
Council President Rodri opened a public hearing on the ordinance authorizing the $275,000 transfer from capital funds and called on the police chief to summarize the request. The chief said the renovations have encountered delays and overages, but the project is about 90% complete. "We've had people uncomfortable for the last year," the chief said, describing ongoing construction noise such as jackhammering. The chief thanked sworn and unsworn personnel for their patience during the work.
Council discussion praised police staff and noted the appropriation was driven by construction overages. After closing the public hearing, Councilman Lawson moved approval and Council Vice President Rigo seconded; the council approved the ordinance by voice vote.
The administration was invited to brief council members in person on the remaining work and to arrange tours of the renovated areas.
The appropriation covers unanticipated costs related to building renovations and improvements at the police station; the chief and administration will return with details if further transfers are needed.
