BOE lowers one homeowner's valuation, approves exemptions and sets May 26 continuation

During the April 15 Board of Equalization meeting, the board voted on a set of discrete actions after considering individual taxpayer appeals and staff recommendations.
Adjustment for a homeowner: After David Steinbach described a recent state review that had reduced his 2025 value and after staff reported on items identified during inspection, Commissioner Frederick moved to set Steinbach's 2026 valuation at $309,900. Commissioner Murphy seconded the motion and the board recorded unanimous approval: Frederick ' Aye; Murphy ' Aye; Dr. Bear ' Aye; Chair ' Aye. The board asked staff to follow up and make corrections for clear objective errors.
Exemptions: The BOE also voted to approve the standard exemption applications for 2026. Commissioner Frederick made the motion, seconded by Commissioner Bear, and the motion carried unanimously.
Scheduling and process notes: The BOE scheduled a continuation on Tuesday, May 26 at 4:00 p.m. so the assessor's office and property owners can meet, exchange financials or appraisals where appropriate, and bring final recommendations to the board before county roll certification.
The board emphasized that objective errors (for example, misrecorded insulated/heated garages or incorrect basement status) can be corrected quickly by staff after a site visit and urged taxpayers to contact the assessor's office or bring federal filings/appraisals prior to the May meeting.
