The Pelham Union Free School District Board of Education reviewed a package of policy updates at its March 25 meeting and waived the third reading for Policy 7611 (Children with Disabilities) to align district practice with recent legal requirements.
Administrators said several related policies — covering nondiscrimination, equal employment opportunity and Title IX/sexual harassment — were updated to reflect federal regulatory changes and to provide clearer reporting and response pathways. Sid (policy staff) said conforming changes were mostly legal updates to bring district policy current.
The board also discussed a proposed extreme-heat policy designed to address indoor and outdoor impacts of high temperatures, including guidance for athletics, recess and other outdoor activities. Administrators said they retained certain local language from the prior policy to ensure coverage for athletics and outdoor supervision while conforming to state guidance.
Trustees said they want the community to have an opportunity to review the changes and emphasized training and messaging to create a "see something, say something" culture for harassment and safety. The board approved policy 7611 by waiving the third reading and placed other updated policies on the track for formal adoption at the next meeting.
Administrators said they plan to distribute spring reminders to staff and families once the updated policies are formally adopted and ensure that training and reporting mechanisms are clear.
