The Dinwiddie County School Board voted to approve a proposed day trip for sixth- and seventh-grade gifted students to the Morehead Planetarium on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.
Latrice Johnson, the district’s secondary gifted instructor based at Dillard Middle School, described the April 23 day trip as an opportunity to "bring the classroom to life," citing a recent classroom Mars-habitat project and offering students a planetarium program, campus tour and dining-hall meal. Johnson said the trip is intended to extend classroom learning through hands-on experiences.
Board members asked questions about timing and logistics and encouraged Johnson to arrange for student presenters at a future meeting so the board could hear directly from participating students. A motion to approve the field trip was made, seconded and carried by voice vote.
What’s next: The gifted program will proceed with trip logistics and notify families of the approved April 23 outing.
