Board announces superintendent appointment; students and teachers recognized

The Wilson County Board of Education on April 20 announced the board's appointment of Dr. Ben Williams as the district's next superintendent, effective July 1.
The chair said Dr. Mills will be "sorely missed" and that the board is "very optimistic" about district direction under Dr. Williams. The announcement was delivered during the chair's report and recorded as part of routine district communications at the meeting.
The meeting also included a series of "good news" recognitions presented by Dr. Wilson and Ms. Boyette. Students from Lee Woodard Elementary were honored for earning the FIRST LEGO League Challenge Core Values Award; coaches and principals were acknowledged and several student winners were named. Elm City Middle School's Techno Vikings were named grand champions in the district middle-school STEM robotics competition and earned the highest coding score; the team and coaching staff were recognized.
New Hope Elementary's elementary Battle of the Books team and Springfield Middle School's middle-school Battle of the Books team were each recognized for winning their respective competitions; coaches and multiple student participants were named. Dr. Wilson also congratulated Shannon Campbell, the district Teacher of the Year and the North Carolina Central Region nominee.
These recognitions were presented as part of the meeting's good-news segment and received applause from the board and attendees.
