Superintendent reports dental services, enrollment correction and third-quarter attendance

Dr. Steinhoff reported that a United Way-funded Delta Dental Bus delivered $58,003 in dental services, corrected junior kindergarten/kindergarten registration from 91 to 127 when including transitioning students, projected fall enrollment using a 1.86 growth factor, and reported district third-quarter attendance at 89% with building-level figures.
Superintendent Dr. Steinhoff told the board on April 13 that the Delta Dental Bus, funded by the United Way, completed $58,003 worth of dental care (x-rays, exams, cleanings, fillings and extractions) for children up to age 21 who had not seen a dentist in two years.
He corrected earlier registration figures for junior kindergarten and kindergarten: initial figures of 91 students did not include 36 current junior kindergarten students who will transition to kindergarten, bringing the total to 127. Using the district’s historical growth factor of 1.86 from registration to fall enrollment over the last five years, staff estimated junior K and K fall enrollment could be about 236 if trends hold.
Dr. Steinhoff also provided third-quarter attendance rates by building: Buchanan K-1 Center 91%, Madison 2-3 Center 92%, Washington 4-5 Center 94%, Huron Middle School 91%, and Huron High School 87%, for a district-wide third-quarter attendance rate of 89%.
He closed by announcing a Governmental Affairs Committee school board election forum on May 9 at City Hall, noting incumbent Shelly Simmonsma is challenged by Sarah Miros.
