Verona council authorizes up to three part-time firefighters to receive WRS benefits

The Verona Common Council voted to authorize up to three part-time firefighters to receive Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) benefits in 2026.
Alder Helmke said the move addresses staffing and coverage challenges in the fire department, reduces overtime pressures on full-time staff and supports leadership development among part-time personnel. Staff described WRS eligibility as triggered when an employee exceeds 1,200 hours worked on a rolling annual basis.
The personnel committee recommended unanimous approval. Staff estimated the proposal would cost approximately $120,000 for the year and said funding would come from existing vacancies in the fire chief and battalion chief positions; long-term staffing and FTE decisions will be discussed as part of the 2027 budget process. The motion passed by voice vote.
