Harrisburg council approves fireworks contract for July 4; city says public safety will guide planning

Harrisburg City Council unanimously approved a contract on May 26 to hire Bixler Pyrochnics Incorporated to provide the city’s July 4, 2026 fireworks display.

Antonio Maggna, the business administrator filling in for the special events manager, said the proposal would produce a 15‑minute show with an opening, main body and grand finale and estimated the cost at about $48,000. "Our biggest priority is the public safety element," Maggna said, adding staff are coordinating a safety plan with the city police, state police and public works.

Council members asked how many proposals were received and whether the vendor is local. Maggna said the administration received several proposals, that the vendor was chosen based on prior positive experience, and that sponsors are expected to cover much of the show cost though the city would provide updates closer to the event. President Hill noted for the record that "Bixler is based in Ashlin, Pennsylvania" and that multiple proposals were considered.

Several council members pressed for clearer public communications about safety planning. Vice President Jones and others urged the administration to publish a community-facing safety plan and to provide timely updates on parking, crowd control and other logistics as the event approaches. Maggna said a sponsor list and final operational details will be released nearer the date.

The council placed Resolution 45 on the legislative agenda and approved it by roll call, 7–0. Staff said they will return to the public with more detailed safety and logistical information as plans solidify.
