Votes at a glance: Commission approves bids for roadwork, several street districts and funds for holiday decorations

At its March 26 special meeting the City Commission approved a series of routine maintenance and improvement actions and a budget amendment for holiday decorations.

Projects approved or advanced: - Authorization to call for bids on seal-coat project 2500103 (routine pavement maintenance). Commissioner Pierce moved; the motion was seconded and approved by roll call. - Approval of resolutions and direction to advertise bids for street-improvement districts 8225, 8325 and 8425. Staff explained the districts were split so property owners could opt out of special assessments; the commission approved moving forward with a single plan set to realize economy-of-scale benefits. - Approval of street-improvement district 8525 for downtown alleys; as part of that work the commission approved milling and overlay of the senior center parking lot (city-maintained property). Commissioners said parking-lot costs would be tracked separately. - Budget amendment to increase the beautification account’s Christmas-decorations funding from $4,000 to $15,000, an $11,000 increase. Commissioners discussed buying LED pole decorations across corridors (6th Avenue, 6th Street, College Drive, Highway 19 and downtown), phasing purchases over multiple years and including the larger amount in future budget cycles as a maintenance item.

All motions described above were moved, seconded and carried in voice or roll-call votes during the meeting.

What’s next: Staff will issue bid advertisements as directed and proceed with procurement steps; the beautification purchases will be phased and tracked during the budget cycle.
