Summit Township opens public review of amended Walnut Creek pollution-reduction plan; hearing set for Feb. 3, 2025

Summit Township officials announced a public review period and hearing for an amended pollution-reduction plan tied to the Township’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer (MS4) permit.
Engineer Jonas told the board the amended PRP for impaired portions of the Walnut Creek Watershed will be available for public inspection at the Summit Township municipal building and on the township website from Jan. 3, 2025, through Feb. 3, 2025. A public hearing to accept comment on the amendment is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 3, 2025.
According to Jonas, the amendment would incorporate stormwater management facilities that have been constructed or are under construction since the plan’s initial approval in 2017 and would renovate and retrofit an existing detention basin behind the Target shopping area to reduce sediment discharge to the watershed. The engineer said the amendment is being prepared to meet permit requirements for impaired portions of Walnut Creek and will be advertised in local print and social channels.
Why it matters: the PRP amendment sets how the township will account for and manage stormwater discharges from developed areas in the Walnut Creek Watershed. Changes to detention basins and incorporation of newer stormwater facilities can alter how runoff and sediment are routed and treated, affecting water quality downstream.
What’s next: the public review period runs Jan. 3–Feb. 3, 2025; the Township will hold a public hearing on Feb. 3, 2025, and will accept written and oral comments during that time. Documents will be posted at the municipal building and on the Summit Township website.
