They said takeout and restaurant establishments remain the largest sources of single‑use food-service packaging; some retailers already use paper bags or distribute cloth bags, and a few businesses gave positive feedback or offered to help with environmental steps.
The committee agreed to continue interviews to broaden the sample, to track business responses in the spreadsheet and to focus initially on a plastic‑bag outreach that could include a voluntary transition period for retailers to use alternative bags. Members discussed practical concerns for businesses: cost differences (participants said plastics were generally cheaper than paper), branding and printing costs for new bags, and the need for a transition period to sell through existing stock. The group did not decide on an ordinance or mandatory local rule; the effort is framed as outreach, education and voluntary transition planning.
Next steps: the EAC will continue business visits, expand the spreadsheet, and report back with broader findings to determine whether to recommend a policy or further outreach.
