Tipton Board Approves 5K Route and Main Street Summer Closure; Requires Officer at Busy Crossing

The Tipton City Board of Public Safety voted to approve temporary street closures for a community 5K scheduled for May 30 and a Main Street summer kickoff event.

At the meeting, presenter Jackson Muny described the 5K route: runners will follow Madison Street to West Street into the park, proceed along park trails to Fairgrounds Road, cross State Road 19 into the elementary parking lot, continue on school property, then return via Madison and West Streets to the start. "The 5K is for pedestrian safety awareness during high traffic times of the month," Muny said, explaining the event's focus on encouraging drivers and pedestrians to watch for one another.

Board members expressed concern about the planned crossing of State Road 19 and asked organizers to staff the crossing. The board recorded that departments reviewed the route and recommended approval on the condition an officer or other qualified traffic controller be present at the State Road 19 crossing and that the run use the marked crosswalk by the school and tennis courts when returning from the park. With those conditions in place, the board approved the 5K street-closure request by voice vote.

Patty requested a separate temporary closure of Court Street (between Madison and Jefferson) from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the Main Street summer kickoff, which will feature yard games, food trucks, a band and inflatables. The board noted standard requirements for barricades, cones and cleanup and approved that closure by voice vote.
