School committee enacts Sheen-to‑Pine Hill kindergarten buffer zone, notifies families

He told the committee the move leaves Pine Hill with four kindergarten sections and class sizes in the mid‑teens; Shien would have two sections with class sizes near 18.
Committee members questioned whether families who register after May 1 in the buffer area would also be directed to Pine Hill. Tim replied that, barring major enrollment shifts, "the plan is that yes, the new families that register within that buffer zone would go to Pine Hill." Members urged clearer communications to parents, including telling notified families how many neighbors were affected and tracking whether late registrations represent move‑ins or families who missed initial registration deadlines.
The administration said the buffer decision is intended for the coming registration season; the committee noted that enactment will have residual effects because siblings of newly buffered students may later qualify under sibling policies.
