Perryton ISD pilots NWEA MAP testing to track student growth, officials say

District staff presented the NWEA MAP assessment pilot and said the tool will help teachers measure individual student growth and project performance on statewide measures. Mrs. Tyrie explained MAP is a nationally normed, computer-adaptive screener that "projects proficiency in both STAR and ACT and SAT" and provides district, school, class and student reports that can be shared with parents.

Staff said the district is piloting MAP in elementary grades and will administer beginning-, mid- and end-of-year assessments to measure growth and inform targeted instruction and interventions. The presenter said MAP is TIA-approved and that for the district's K-1-2 administration so far reading fell at about the 55th percentile nationally while math was at about the 67th percentile.

Teachers and leaders told the board MAP's adaptive format helps identify individual needs and can support intervention planning by grouping students according to skill gaps. Staff described a feature that interrupts suspected rapid guessing and alerts teachers so they can address test-taking behavior during administration. No procurement decision was recorded at the meeting; staff said they would continue piloting the program and consider costs and implementation questions.
