School committee approves slate of policy updates, plans to host manual on MASC site; Rotary donation accepted

At its March 19 meeting the Winchester School Committee approved several administrative items and policy updates and accepted a donation to support student activities.
The consent agenda included acceptance of a $1,600 donation from the Winchester Rotary Club for the Winchester High School combat robotics club; the motion was moved, seconded, and the chair announced the vote was unanimous.
On policy matters, the committee moved to accept policy updates listed in the agenda — including policies with no changes, MASC updates, additions and deletions — with enumerated exceptions (IMA and one duplicate KB removed). The motion passed unanimously. The committee also noted that IKF (graduation requirements) remains under review and should be tabled for further discussion.
During a first‑reading discussion led by the policy subcommittee, members said many Winchester‑specific insertions in the policy manual had become stale or pointed to third‑party documents that are updated independently. The subcommittee recommended retaining core policy language in the manual and linking to live external documents rather than copying them into district policy. Committee members confirmed a plan to move the district policy manual to the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) site so it will be searchable, updatable and easier for the public to compare with other districts.
The committee also announced upcoming meetings: an executive session on Monday, March 23 at 3:30 p.m., and an in‑person meeting March 26 that will include an Early Literacy Team (ELT) presentation with teacher and student work samples. Outgoing member Michelle Bergstrom was recognized for nine years of service and delivered a farewell reflection before the committee adjourned.
