Councilors on March 17 introduced Resolution 26-3-2, which would appoint Miss Tate to a three-year term on the Laurens City Board of Zoning Appeals beginning with the council's vote. The candidate addressed the council, saying she is a Laurens City resident, a practicing attorney with about 14 years of experience and a real-estate litigator who performs title work and has reviewed the city's new zoning materials. She stated she is also running for House District 14 and would step down if elected.
Several councilors requested additional time to review other applicants and to coordinate nominations as a team. Miss Miller voiced frustration about council members receiving limited information about upcoming appointments: "It's very frustrating to me. It's very hurting to me because being informed, yes, we do get what go on..." The mayor and other councilors said they had no objection to scheduling a more informal workshop where questions could be asked and applicants could be discussed ahead of a final vote.
A motion to table the resolution was made and seconded; the council voted to table the appointment and will revisit the matter at the April meeting. No appointment or vote to fill the vacancy occurred at this session.
