Board hears collections updates, declines full restoration role for historic kitchen; plans technical support

Ben Williams told trustees the research collections committee examined a deteriorating 1830s external kitchen on a nearby plantation property recently acquired by Carter Bank and Trust. Staff and outside architects/archaeologists concluded the structure is in very poor condition and likely beyond the museum’s capacity for full restoration; the bank and local historical groups may lead preservation with the museum offering technical assistance and help pursuing grants.
Trustees also moved to recognize longtime research associate Dr. Art Evans as a senior fellow in honor of his contributions to entomology and collections management; the board planned a photograph during the meeting break and intended to finalize the formal recognition shortly thereafter.
Collections and fieldwork updates: Staff reported major collecting trips (including the Florida Keys and Archbold Biological Station) yielding thousands of specimens to be processed and accessioned; new curatorial hires and novel lab techniques (e.g., DNA recovery from millipedes) were highlighted. Curators reported progress on provenance research suggesting the museum’s partial mastodon may correspond to material displayed at Monticello, and they described an interagency transfer of a multi-tank cold-water aquarium to support a Dan River Basin display.
Next steps: The museum will provide technical consulting for the historic kitchen project, pursue partnerships and grants for stabilization, and continue processing new specimens and provenance work.
