Residents urge council to study Sound Transit membership; civic club asks to reconsider fireworks ban

During the April 7 public-comment period two organized public speakers urged different policy courses.

Transit feasibility: Elijah Vincent, appearing for the Snoqualmie Valley Transit Riders Coalition, said he submitted a formal proposal to the clerk requesting a feasibility study on Sound Transit membership. "If we pass this through and actually join Sound Transit, it will show the state that we are actively trying to improve public transit as we are a little bit underserved in that area," Vincent said. He suggested membership could unlock state funding for local transit and road improvements along key corridors.

Fireworks ban: A representative of the Duvall Civic Club identified himself as Don and urged council to reconsider a recently adopted fireworks ban that will prohibit stand sales in town. Don said the civic-club stand funded scholarships and community programs and that a ban only shifts demand to more dangerous illegal devices purchased elsewhere. "Most fireworks stands... are run by a nonprofit group to raise money to keep doing the good work they're doing in the community," he said, adding that "we had no fireworks fires or issues here" historically and urging a modified approach (ground-based displays or vendor-only sales) to reduce unsafe products.
