UA System committee approves 18 UA athletics contracts and UAB head‑coach deal

Greg Byrne, UA director of athletics, walked the committee through each proposed agreement. Notable approvals included a six‑year extension for men's basketball head coach Nate Oats through March 31, 2032, with the average annual compensation rising from $6.275 million to $7.25 million and buyout terms outlined at $15 million through March 2027 and $12 million through March 2028. The committee also approved a seven‑year extension for football coach Kalen DeBoer with compensation set at $12.5 million annually and staged buyouts of $10 million (through Jan. 31, 2027), $8 million (through Jan. 31, 2028) and $6 million (through Jan. 31, 2029).
Byrne also presented multi‑year contracts and salary schedules for assistant coaches and staff, including defensive coordinator Kane Wommack (three years, $2.35M first year rising to $2.65M in year three), and several position coaches and support roles. Byrne said the department had researched market competitiveness and discussed stability with university leadership.
Trustee Buddy Vander Vorst asked whether the salary levels were necessary to recruit and retain Division I coaching talent; Byrne replied the university views the expenditures as "a significant investment by our department, by our university," and said the contracts were shaped by market research and a desire for program stability. Trustee Simon singled out trainer Jeff Allen, calling him "undoubtedly one of the best that's in the entire country," and Byrne echoed appreciation for Allen's contributions to player health.
Separately, the committee considered a UAB item presented by UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram: a five‑year employment agreement for UAB head coach Alex Mortensen with a base salary of $800,000 plus $100,000 for radio/talent fees and $100,000 for promotional/fundraising fees. The committee approved that item by voice vote.
All athletics items were adopted by the committee with no recorded dissents. The committee then proceeded to non‑athletics items on the agenda.
