Newman — City staff used the May 12 meeting to share several community updates, including local hiring, recreational sign-ups and an upcoming fundraising effort for a veteran memorial.
Michael, identified on the record as city manager staff, said the city "is currently advertising for a public works employee to work at our wastewater treatment plant" and asked residents to consult the city website for application details. He also said the council's next meeting, originally scheduled for May 26, has been moved to Wednesday, May 27.
Allie, a city staff member, told the council the city is accepting soccer registrations through May 29 with a late sign-up during the first week of June. She also said the downtown farmers market is accepting vendor applications and that prospective vendors can pick up an application from her or from the chamber at State Farm between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
A staff member announced plans for a veteran circle fundraiser in which members of the public can purchase engraved bricks. The staff member said organizers hope to begin sales in June and that sales "may run June and July," with a booth planned at the farmers market to display a sample brick and accept purchases.
Bowen thanked volunteers who worked on a recent Fall Festival beautification effort at Pioneer and said the grant administrator is scheduled to conduct a site walk-through the next day as the city finalizes grant-related requirements. The Chief reminded council members that the police department's Explorer post is active and invited referrals of high-school-age residents.
No formal votes were taken on these items; they were presented as informational updates and reminders.
