Transylvania County Schools director reports safety upgrades; visitor-management rollout planned for August

Courtney Owens, identified to the board as the district director of student services and safe schools, reported progress on the district’s safety and strategic-plan measures. "We have successfully installed our Centegix program," Owens told the board, adding that staff and at least one school resource officer have been trained to use the panic-button system.
Owens said a visitor-management system will go fully live when students return in August and that the district passed fire inspections conducted with the county fire marshal in September 2025 and again in April 2026. She described assessments conducted in August 2025 with the fire marshal, school resource officers, maintenance staff and principals, and said those assessments feed the district’s school-management plans.
Owens said the state changed the school-management-plan format and she will present a revised plan to the board in October. She also said the district will conduct summer walk-throughs to review protocols and emphasized continuous improvement in safety practices.
Board members asked no clarifying questions during this item and no board action was taken; the item was presented for information and to seek continued attention to safety implementation.
