James Hum, executive director of the Cannabis Compliance Board, told the board at its March 19, 2026 meeting that the governor has asked him to become the director of the Governor's Office of Energy and that his first day in the new role will be March 30, 2026. "I love the CCB and this industry and that I sure am going to miss this place," he said.
Board members used the meeting to publicly thank Hum for his two-and-a-half years leading the agency. Chair Major General Barry praised Hum's stewardship, calling his legacy at the CCB "set," and several members highlighted improvements in industry communication, regulatory stability and the agency's inspection and enforcement work during his tenure.
Hum used his farewell remarks to single out staff across the agency by name and function, thanking legal advisers, inspection and audit teams, lab and enforcement personnel, and program support staff for their roles in maintaining compliance and public safety. He said he valued the collaborative relationship the agency developed with industry stakeholders.
Deputy Director Miles will assume the role of acting director upon Hum's departure. The board did not take a vote at the meeting to confirm a permanent replacement; the transition to Miles will be in place while the governor's office and the agency complete any appointment or staffing processes. The board set its next meeting for April 16, 2026.
The announcement comes amid a full agenda that included license transfers and disciplinary matters. Hum thanked the board and staff for their work and said he was "forever and eternally grateful" for his time at the CCB.
