Davie County Schools honors students for music, math and national competitions

At the May 2026 Davie County Schools board meeting, the board paused regular business to recognize student achievements in music, math and national skills competitions.

Emily Moore, principal at South Davy Middle School, introduced band director Andrew Hicks, who said six South Davy students earned spots in the Northwest all-district band after competing against roughly 2,000 students across 17 counties. Hicks also noted the eighth-grade band earned a superior rating at the North Carolina Music Performance Adjudication (NPA) and that the district has now achieved three consecutive superior ratings.

At the high school level staff reported that 120 of about 170 high-school band students auditioned for all-district and that 27 students made all-district (29 after last-minute call-ups). Nine students from the high-school program qualified for All State — a program record — and three students were named to All State: Ethan Demer, Eric Pope and Silus Johnson.

Other recognitions included North Davy students who advanced in the Global Amazing Shake competition (one reached the top-50 round), William Ellis Middle students who placed third in the region at Math Counts (team members named), and NCCTM qualifiers who placed in the top ten at state-level contests. Ashley Jackson and colleagues described the rapid growth of a new math club and congratulated students who advanced to regional and state rounds.
