Design Advisory Committee seeks clearer HDC signage rules and asks whether expedited review is possible

During general business on March 18 the Design Advisory Committee discussed the need for clearer guidance on signage standards and permitting pathways for historic downtown storefronts.
Committee members JB Brodeur and Jackie Kain said they did not fully understand the Historic District Commission’s standards for what is considered “appropriate” signage on historic buildings and wanted clearer administration of those rules. Kain questioned whether the town could offer an expedited or simpler approach so applicants face fewer hurdles in securing approvals.
Don Howe said the HDC’s requirements are included in its bylaws and pointed the committee to the HDC website for detail; he also asked that the committee clarify the Building Inspector’s role in sign permitting. The committee recorded no public comments on these matters during Citizen Speak Time and adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
Members agreed to follow up to better understand HDC standards and the interaction between HDC and the town’s building‑inspector process so that the DAC can advise applicants more clearly.
