Nick Speidel, who represented Half Rats, described a garden‑bed placement for the freestanding sign to hang from an existing historic black metal pole. He said the sign’s façade would be less than 5 square feet and that he remained uncertain whether it should hang parallel to the street or perpendicular, the latter option requiring the name on both sides.
Committee members said the design worked well in the location shown and did not oppose the perpendicular option if needed. The motion to recommend the freestanding sign as presented, including possible slight alterations in hanging position, was moved by JB Brodeur and seconded by Don Howe; Jackie Kain voted in favor. The vote was recorded as 3 in favor, 0 opposed.
Don Howe said he needed greater clarity on how to calculate window coverage under Historic District Commission bylaws for historic buildings, an issue the committee agreed to follow up on. The committee’s recommendation is advisory; applicants should confirm any HDC requirements or building‑inspector rules that may apply before final installation.
