BAR details CalViZ updates: noise‑inspection data, DAD 2.0 certification and VIN decoder work

Paul Hedgeland of BAR’s Engineering and Research branch summarized recent and planned California Vehicle Inspection System (CalViZ) releases and technical work. He said a 25.x release added referee noise‑inspection support and that CalViZ now includes inspection history pages that show noise results alongside smog and safety inspections. The bureau also rebranded the OBD Inspection System as CalViZ to reflect the addition of safety inspections.
Hedgeland outlined upcoming items: a 26.1 release for platform modernization and improved safety‑recall lookup logic, a VIN‑decoder improvement planned for Q2 2026, and electronic access for courts to query noise‑inspection certificates. CalViZ will track DAD (data acquisition device) 2.0 firmware and device certification records once vendors complete testing; Hedgeland said the DAD 2.0 certification process will run during the summer and a public request for information (RFI) for a contracted inspection network for pre‑OBD vehicles was released. He also warned the next release will no longer support 32‑bit Windows and noted only a few stations statewide still use legacy platforms.
Advisory members thanked BAR for advance notices to stations and raised practical issues: leased equipment and vendor‑timed upgrades, station OS migration timeframes, and vendor coordination for firmware updates. BAR said it would continue vendor outreach and give stations notice through system alerts.
