GATES COUNTY โ The Gates County Board of Equalization and Review convened its 2026 session and heard from the county tax administrator that no property assessment appeals were scheduled for the evening. The board voted unanimously to recess until May 20 at 5:30 p.m.
"By North Carolina General Statute, until the board convenes, I as the tax administrator have the authority to make changes to property assessment for good cause," Taylor Powell, the county tax administrator, told the board as she opened the meeting and reviewed the appeals process under N.C. Gen. Stat. 105-287. Powell asked members of the public to contact the tax office to begin informal appeals and to schedule any hearings.
Emily Truman, serving as the 2026 board chair, identified the commissioners and staff present, including Commissioners Jonathan Kradel, Brian Rountree and Dave Forsyth, County Manager Scott Sauer and Clerk of Board Renee Draper. Commissioner Brian Rountree led the invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance before business began.
The chair requested a formal motion to open the Board of Equalization and Review; a commissioner moved, another seconded, and the board approved the motion without recorded dissent. Later, with no appeals on the agenda, the board recessed the meeting until May 20 at 5:30 p.m., "as advertised pursuant to North Carolina General Statute 105-322," a motion that was likewise moved, seconded and approved unanimously.
The tax administrator summarized the informal appeal process that precedes a board hearing: property owners should begin with an informal appeal through the tax office; if unresolved, they may appear before the Board of Equalization and Review for final consideration. Powell encouraged anyone wishing to appeal to contact the tax office to schedule the necessary appointments.
The board took no substantive hearings or votes on property assessments at the session and did not record a roll-call vote naming individual commissioners. The next scheduled meeting of the Board of Equalization and Review is May 20 at 5:30 p.m., per the board's motion.
