Arlington ISD trustees met April 9 for a workshop on the district’s draft strategic objectives, hearing presentations from district staff and asking for clearer, community‑facing measures on academic growth, equity, employee well‑being, safety and facilities.
District staff outlined a multi‑year framework tying the board’s priorities to annual improvement plans and the superintendent’s evaluation, and showed draft measures and a responsibility (RACI) chart. Jennifer, a district presenter, described the drafting approach: “So that’s the way that this is kind of mapped out right now. It’s not perfect and it’s not final because we don’t know for sure that our strategic objectives are final,” and said the cabinet is identifying who will be responsible for each strategy.
Why it matters: trustees stressed that the strategic objectives are the board’s end state and must provide evidence the public will accept. The objectives will guide annual plans and key progress measures (KPMs) that feed the superintendent evaluation and district reporting.
Trustees pressed staff on measurement and timing. Several trustees said the plan should explicitly address closing opportunity gaps and post‑secondary outcomes — graduation, enlistment, employment or enrollment (the “three E’s”) — even as state assessments and accountability rules change. One trustee urged caution about setting long‑term numeric targets tied to an assessment that may be reworked, and suggested using annual KPMs and multiple screeners (rather than a single test) to track progress.
On staff well‑being and culture, trustees recommended making employee engagement and well‑being visible in the objectives so Arlington is a “destination” for educators. Staff said those items are reflected across culture and talent‑and‑resources sections and can be tightened into the objective language and KPMs.
Safety and discipline also drew scrutiny. Staff said district discipline metrics show improvement but trustees reported a persistent public perception that incidents are underreported. Several trustees urged publishing comparative trend data (for example, counts year‑over‑year) to demonstrate progress and counter misperception; staff said a deeper safety workshop will be scheduled to explore what data to include.
Trustees discussed marketing and family engagement as critical to making Arlington a first choice for parents, and raised facilities and “right‑sizing” as a candidate strategic objective under resources or fiscal stability because of its fiscal scale.
Adoption timing: staff asked whether the board preferred to adopt content now so annual plans can proceed, or to wait for a polished public publication; trustees were split but many urged moving with urgency so annual district and campus improvement planning can begin. Staff said it will incorporate feedback and aims to return with a final product around July for board consideration before the new school year.
No formal votes were taken during the open workshop; at 6:19 p.m. the board recessed into a brief closed session. District staff cited several statutory code sections aloud when moving to closed session and said the workshop feedback will be used to develop the district and campus plans that follow.
