Kearney R‑I board approves counseling framework, roofing design work and network upgrades

The Kearney R‑I Board of Education approved several contracts Tuesday aimed at facilities, student supports and technology.
The board approved Amendment 11 with New Kirk Novak, the district’s bond-construction partner, to advance design and contracting work on prioritized projects. Administration earlier told the board that South View roofing has moved to the top of the remaining bond priorities and that design work will address decking, venting and acoustical concerns.
Ben Vandrew of New Kirk Novak told the board the district is evaluating replacing aging tectum decking with an acoustical metal deck and improving ventilation to prevent future premature deterioration. He said insurance inspections and warranty reviews did not identify a covered peril and the last roof replacement on the affected building was performed in 2010.
The board approved a $4,900 agreement with Cornerstones of Care to adopt a behavioral framework aligned to the district’s MTSS (multi-tiered systems of support) work; administrators said teacher leaders and counselors will receive initial training and the cost is expected to be covered from the county children’s-services fund if that funding line is approved.
On technology, the board approved a 15-year underground fiber lease with Unite Private Networks (now Segra) for $39,000 per year; district staff said the federal E-Rate program will provide a 50% discount. The board also authorized a network refresh purchase from Provision Data Solutions (lowest bid $121,095 pre-discount) to replace switches and wireless gear in the junior high and continue the district’s transition to Fortinet products, and approved a 39-month agreement for PowerSchool’s enrollment product to resolve data-import issues affecting staff workloads.
Administrators said the technology purchases are part of an ongoing refresh and will be supported in part by E-Rate discounts; board members approved the contracts by voice votes.
