Board members voted to award the architectural services contract after an eight‑firm solicitation and interviews; Kevin Nelson, a partner at Hollis & Miller, attended the meeting. The contract will run three years with the option to extend to five, according to the board presentation.
The board also approved Amendment 12 to the district's Newkirk Novak construction manager‑at‑risk contract to cover shingle and metal‑decking replacement at Southview, with the board noting the expense will come from remaining 2022 bond funds. Ben Vandrew, who presented the scope, said crews will prioritize sections the district marked in green so the most critical areas are dry and usable before school starts. "As soon as we tear off a piece of decking, it will get replaced that chunk with metal decking that day and then dry it in," he said, describing a phased approach that aims to limit disruption to school operations.
Board members asked about timeline, acoustical decking and HVAC coordination; presenters said some rooftop equipment and conduit will be temporarily removed and reset as crews replace decking. The team said the district planned multiple crews and shifts to avoid overtime and to try to complete the highest‑priority areas before classes resume.
Separately, the board approved a district agreement with Call Valley Engineering to act as a third‑party inspector for welds on the metal decking panels tied to the roofing work, an expense estimated at $20,000 or below and to be funded from bond proceeds.
The board was advised that adding the Southview roof work to the approved summer projects will exhaust the district's remaining 2022 bond funds. Trustees approved the contracts and amendments by voice/roll call votes.
