Newington fire marshal authorized to hire up to two per‑diem inspectors

The Newington Board of Fire Commissioners voted to authorize hiring up to two per‑diem fire‑marshal inspectors to replace a departing inspector and offset lost inspection hours.
DJ, speaking for the fire marshal's office, said one inspector recently left for another job and the department wants to run a hiring process to replace that open per‑diem position and to add a second per‑diem inspector to capture hours that other inspectors cannot cover. "So, we'd like to run a process to replace that open per diem position," DJ said, adding that the positions are funded through existing per‑diem allocations and "there's no cost" to the department for the additional hire when hours are managed within budget.
A commissioner moved to accept the fire marshal's recommendation for two new per‑diem inspectors; the motion was seconded and the board voted in favor. Commissioners said the change will allow the department to complete more inspections and better use allocated hours while retaining existing full‑time staff for other duties.
DJ also reported several active projects in town — egress work at Williamstown Court, a new fire alarm at 375 Willard Avenue, sprinkler repairs at a FedEx/DSW site, ongoing development at Culver Street, and five new Safe Homes (hoarding) cases this year — and described an IT/GIS app being developed to map hydrants and Knoxboxes to support field operations.
