Rio Grande City approves Laguna Heights replat and clears site plans for Fire Station No. 2

Donnie Cantu of the planning department presented the Lot 16 replat, describing a conversion of a formerly single lot into eight multifamily lots on San Roberto Road in the Eisenhower area. Planning recommended final approval conditioned on two outstanding items: executed contract signatures from AEP and payment/signatures for Rio Water Supply; staff told commissioners those two items should be completed within 10 days. Commissioner [speaker 14] moved to approve item 7c as presented and the motion carried unanimously.
Cantu also presented civil plans for a new Fire Station No. 2, noting utilities, a potential west-side sidewalk easement and minor outstanding items (including confirmation around an abandoned gas line). Staff recommended approval with limited modifications so the project can proceed to structural design and bidding. Commissioners approved the plans pending the recommended amendments and set a timeline to advertise for bids in about one month.
Commissioners emphasized that city projects must meet the same requirements imposed on private developers; staff said engineering and permitting steps are nearly complete and the city anticipates soliciting construction bids soon.
Both approvals were taken with unanimous votes and will move into the next administrative steps — completing required sign-offs for the replat and finalizing engineering documents and bidding for the fire station.
