The Sault Ste. Marie City Commission voted unanimously Aug. 19 to designate IDEXX Laboratories Inc. as a sole-source vendor for bacteriological testing supplies used at the city's water treatment facility. City Manager Jetman said the laboratory’s certified equipment requires consumables that come only from IDEXX, which is why an exception to standard competitive purchasing was requested.
A commissioner moved to approve the sole-source designation, the motion was seconded, and commissioners voted in favor by voice vote. One commissioner asked whether another vendor could supply the same equipment; the city manager reiterated that the existing certification and equipment compatibility depend on IDEXX products. The motion passed unanimously.
The designation allows the city to procure the specified microbiological testing supplies without a competitive bid because the items are compatible with the laboratory’s certified processes, according to the city manager’s explanation. The city did not specify additional contract terms or fiscal amounts in the meeting discussion.
