The RSU 04 school board voted to authorize a lease-purchase resolution for teacher laptops in a principal amount of $126,650, a move finance staff said will accelerate device deployment ahead of the next school year.
Sam, speaking for finance and facilities, told the board the district budget includes planned device purchases and that the lease would move the timeline up so staff have time over the summer to prepare and deploy devices. Sam said the $126,650 principal covers 170 MacBook 'Neo' devices at roughly $745 per unit and includes AppleCare and the deployment licensing the district requires. He added the district could opt to buy the machines outright at year-end if state subsidy adjustments leave sufficient year-end funds; buying outright would reduce interest and the purchase price by about $3,000 in the documents reviewed.
Board member Chrissy asked for clarification about the full figure and whether the $132,540 number discussed earlier included interest; finance staff and another finance member, Matt, confirmed that $132,540 reflects the interest-inclusive total in the draft lease. Sam also noted a potential $100 per-unit buyback guarantee from Apple that would yield roughly $17,000 at the end of a four-year cycle.
After discussion about timing and fiscal options, a motion to adopt the lease-purchase resolution was moved and the board adopted the resolution; meeting notes record the motion as passing.
Next steps: Staff said they will continue to analyze year-end fund availability and may elect to purchase outright if June subsidy payments are favorable; otherwise the board authorized executing the lease to allow earlier device deployment.
