Trustees and the public pressed for clarity on the policy’s boundaries. Trustee Benz said she found the statute “poorly written” and warned of unintended consequences; another trustee asked whether textbooks containing anatomical illustrations (for AP biology, for example) could be swept into a challenge under the new law. Administrators said curriculum items are handled through the curriculum adoption and challenge processes and that the district will draft detailed procedures for reconsideration and public input.
The board voted to adopt the policy for a first read so it can be posted for public comment and further refinement. Administration told trustees it will return with a proposed procedure (anticipated August–September) that clarifies the timelines and appeal steps.
