Following a closed executive session on May 11 to discuss personnel and litigation matters, the Edcouch‑Elsa ISD board returned to open session and approved multiple personnel and legal actions.
Legal counsel recommended the board adopt motions to move forward with resignations, proposed non‑renewals and terminations as presented in executive session. The board recorded motions to propose non‑renewal of chapter 21 term contracts for classroom teachers and other certified staff, to terminate probationary chapter 21 contracts at their end of term as presented, and to approve renewals and offers of certain term and non‑chapter 21 employment contracts. For each action the board called the question and the motions carried; one motion recorded a dissenting vote of "nay."
Trustees also approved the previously pulled consent item B8, the 2026‑27 compensation plan, after discussion in open session.
The board voted to appoint Sylvia Garza as interim superintendent, effective June 1, 2026. The president noted the superintendent search posting will begin May 15 and run through June 19.
On litigation, trustees approved entering contingency‑fee legal services for pending multi‑district litigation related to social media usage and authorized submission of the legal services agreement to the Texas attorney general for review.
The meeting adjourned after the board took the actions described above.
Procedural note: actions described above reflect motions and recorded outcomes stated on the meeting record; detailed vote tallies by member were not provided in the transcript beyond oral "I" votes and occasional recorded "nay."
