The Bird Island–Olivia–Lake Lillian School Board elected Greg Pepple chair for 2026 and made a series of routine organizational decisions at a special annual meeting on Jan. 5.
Pepple won the chair position after nominations and a motion to cast a unanimous ballot. After the vote, Pepple said he would “hope everybody grants me some patience” as he learns board procedures. The board then elected Brad as vice chair, Mariela as clerk and Sandy Benson as treasurer in separate unanimous ballots.
The board approved its 2026 regular meeting schedule: meetings are set for the fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m., with exceptions in May and December (third Mondays) and a special meeting on Nov. 12, 2026 to certify election results. Board meeting locations were set to the media center in Olivia unless otherwise posted.
On compensation and travel, members voted to keep board pay at $100 per member for regular and special board meetings, with $100 for a half-day and $200 for a full-day negotiation meeting; all-day seminar compensation is $200. The board also approved a meal reimbursement cap of $60 per full day (receipts required) and adopted the 2026 IRS mileage rate of 72.5 cents per mile effective Jan. 1, 2026.
The board voted to approve the consent agenda, including minutes from the Dec. 22, 2025 regular meeting, and concluded by noting upcoming dates: the MSBA Leadership Conference Jan. 15–16, the regular Jan. 26 meeting and Feb. 23 meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
Pepple, Brad, Mariela and Benson are among the 2026 officers and the board set administrative details and travel allowances that will govern operations for the year ahead.
