Board affirms career-center memorandum and signs partner agreement with Indiana Online

The board voted to continue its memorandum of understanding with Leaport County Career and Technical Education Center (AK Smith Career Center) and approved a partnership agreement to access Indiana Online's course catalog (IAP).
A representative identified as Emma explained that the district sends juniors and seniors to AK Smith for programs such as welding, agriculture, criminal justice and cosmetology. She reported about 22 students tentatively scheduled to attend next year and noted the career center had reduced its fee by about $150 per student for the coming year. Board members asked whether students can participate in both work-based learning and career-center programs; Emma said some students do both and others cycle between programs depending on scheduling.
Separately, administrators described a proposed partnership with Indiana Online, run through the Central Indiana Educational Services Center, to allow students access to teacher-led online courses via the Indiana Course Access Portal (IAP). The district would pay per course (no upfront partnership fee), and administrators gave examples of AP and other courses available. The program was described as complementary to the district’s existing virtual learning center and intended to expand options for students who cannot fit advanced courses into their schedules.
Both items were approved by motions, seconded and carried by voice vote.
