The Enid Public Schools board discussed a potential partnership with the Bedford Agency and the Open Doors marketplace during its April 20 meeting as a way to provide oversight and counseling for student-athletes exploring name-image-and-likeness (NIL) opportunities.
Superintendent Dr. Darrow opened the discussion by acknowledging reservations but describing the district's need to be proactive: "I don't like the portal. I don't like the NIL. But it's not about me," he said, arguing the district must protect athletes and stay compliant.
Administrators and coaches explained the Bedford Agency would provide direct counseling to families, in-person training, phone and email support, and a marketplace where businesses could contract for athlete services. Coach Elrick and Mr. Mills said the agency would help maintain compliance with OSSAA policy and relieve coaches from negotiating or managing deals directly.
Board members asked about family education and oversight; administrators said Bedford will provide two in-person trainings, ongoing contact, and an online athlete page tied to the district's support but that money would not pass through the district. The discussion was informational; the board did not vote and staff said details and logistics would be worked out before any future action.
